Canine rapid tests

Canine rapid tests are diagnostic tools designed for the quick detection of specific pathogens, diseases, or antibodies in dogs. These tests are commonly used in veterinary practices for point-of-care diagnosis, providing results within minutes. The primary components of these tests include a sample pad, conjugate pad, nitrocellulose membrane, and absorbent pad. The test typically uses canine blood, serum, plasma, or sometimes saliva, depending on the target pathogen or condition.

• Lateral Flow Immunoassay (LFIA) Technology: Most canine rapid tests are based on LFIA, which uses antigen-antibody reactions. The sample flows along a strip, and if the target antigen or antibody is present, it binds to labeled antibodies forming a visible line.
• Specificity and Sensitivity: These tests are engineered to detect specific antigens or antibodies such as those for Parvovirus, Distemper, or Ehrlichiosis. The sensitivity (true positive rate) and specificity (true negative rate) are critical metrics, often determined through clinical validation.
• Sample Requirements: Blood or serum is typically collected and applied to the test device. Capillary action moves the sample across the test strip. Canine rapid tests can also sometimes detect fecal samples, depending on the disease being tested for.
• Result Interpretation: Results are generally interpreted by the appearance of colored lines within a window. A control line must appear to ensure the test is valid. The absence or presence of a test line indicates a negative or positive result, respectively.

  • Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis): Detects circulating antigens of adult female heartworms in blood.

Advantages

Limitations

• False Positives/Negatives: Despite high sensitivity and specificity, false results can occur, necessitating confirmation through more comprehensive laboratory tests.
• Limited Detection Window: Some tests may not detect early or late stages of infection, particularly in diseases with fluctuating antigen or antibody levels.
